CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I

wanted some type of closure, I guess. It wasn’t a queen’s duty to tend to the prisoner, especially her custodial needs. But I wanted to feel less guilty about the entire thing, about having Alex’s ex-girlfriend in our dungeon waiting for execution. So I snuck down and gave Suri a well-deserved shower, letting the cold water from the sprinkler overhead fall over her naked skin. I had cuffed her, and surprisingly enough she allowed me to, while I kept the inhibition collar on to limit her angelic powers.

“I apologize for the frigid temperature,” I whispered, standing in the washing cell with her, with the soap on a small towel as I passed my wet hands over her skin. “These lower levels of the palace don’t have hot water.”

She snickered, looking down at me where I started scrubbing her thigh. “Are you going to wash in between my legs, too?”

I blushed, standing myself up straight immediately. “There’s no need to be fresh with me, Suri!” I bit back. “I don’t have to do this, you know!”

“Then why are you?”

She rendered me speechless, that slumped look I had on my face unable to answer her question. “Please, you can reach that far, can’t you? Assist yourself,” I begged her solemnly, handing her the soap bar.

I looked away while she handled her business, feeling the stray water drops tap over my shoulder. I then thought about all the times I’d lied to Alex for my sake, or to please my mother, thinking that I was doing more damage than good to our relationship. I knew no amount of being nice to Suri would make up for it, but at least… it made me feel better.

Once I towel dried her, I gave her a new change of clothes. Something simple—a large white tunic and a pair of shorts, with some slippers for her naked feet. I escorted her back in her cell, Suri hesitant, but she couldn’t give me too much grief with the cuffs she had on. And once she was inside, I unlocked them, while still keeping the collar around her neck.

I served her a meal, something better than what she was used to; meat, potatoes, and veggies on the side. She wolfed it down as soon as I slid the plate inside the little compartment at the bottom of the bars, Suri not taking a second to chew.

“You haven’t been eating?” I asked, taking a seat across from her on the floor.

She looked up to me mid-chew, my words stopping her. “Have you seen what they’ve been serving me?” she grumbled. “Besides, I trust you more than Danny and the rest of the staff here.” She belched. “Listen, I know why you’re doing this,” she started, giving me that sarcastic look. “You feel terrible for turning an innocent human being into a monster.”

My heart skipped a beat.

“Which, to be honest, is a little off-telling for a demon. I guess living on earth for a while can do that to you.
